Today I want to share my guide to the best city walks in the UK with you. There are lots of world-class places to discover in Britain, and these free self-guided walking tours will help you find the best of them. From major landmarks to hidden corners, they cover a lot of ground. I’ve included the routes and maps, too.
City Walks in the UK
From Oxford to Bath, my city walks in the UK cover a range of places in Britain. Whether you like to be in the thick of things or off the beaten path, there’s an urban walk for you.
From major thoroughfares to narrow passageways, expansive squares to hidden courtyards, these self-guided walking tours will take you to some of the top places in the United Kingdom.

1. Oxford Walk
I’ll start my list of city walks in Britain with my free self-guided walking tour in Oxford. This is one of the best university cities in the UK, and the historic streets here are ripe for discovery.
With its famous colleges, pretty green spaces, exciting shopping streets, and beautiful river, there’s plenty to see in Oxford. Whether you’re here on a day trip or an Oxford and Cotswolds day tour, you’ll be able to discover a lot.
This self-guided city walk will take you down the bustling streets and quiet lanes, and it will show you the best colleges and landmarks. It’s perfect if you want to get a broad overview of one of the UK’s most beautiful cities.

2. Notting Hill Walk in London
Next on my list of city walks in the UK is my free self-guided walk in Notting Hill. This London neighborhood is famous for its market, shops, and colorful houses, and there’s a lot to love about it.
That said, a good number of visitors never make it past Portobello Road and the other high streets in the area. But it’s worth getting off the main roads to discover the quiet places locals love about this part of west London.
My walk will show you a different take on the neighborhood and lead you to some of the best quiet streets, hidden mews, and rows of colorful houses in the UK capital. It’s perfect if you want to get to know the local side of Notting Hill.

3. Bath Walking Tour
Another of my favorite city walks in the UK is my free self-guided walking tour in Bath. This is one of the best cities in England, and it’s worth a visit to see its golden stone buildings, elegant crescents, Roman Baths, shops, and waterways.
Home to some of the most well-preserved ancient Roman remains in the world and an abundance of Jane Austen sites, the city is one of the most popular places to visit in Britain.
My route will show you the highlights of the city and take you to some of the less-explored places locals love. No matter if you’re here on a Bath day trip, a weekend trip to Bath, a tour, or a visit to Bath and the Cotswolds, you’ll discover a lot.

4. Cambridge Walk
Another of the best city walks in England is my free self-guided walking tour in Cambridge. This is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, and the historic streets and famous university here are worth seeing.
With its stunning colleges, expansive green spaces, pretty streets, and River Cam, there’s plenty see in Cambridge. Whether you’re here on a day trip or you have 2 days in Cambridge or more, you’ll be able to discover a lot here.

5. Harry Potter Walk in London
Back in the capital, another of my favorite city walks in the UK is my free self-guided Harry Potter walking tour. There are lots of places in London that feature in the books and movies, and it’s fun to see them in person.
From Leadenhall Market to the Ministry of Magic and streets that are said to have inspired Diagon Alley, there’s no shortage of Harry Potter locations to discover on a walk in London.
My themed tour will show you the best places from the films and novels while leading you through some of the most famous areas in the city. You’ll even get to see Platform 9 3/4 and pick up souvenirs at the Harry Potter shop in King’s Cross station.

6. Edinburgh Walking Tour
Next on my list of city walks in the UK is my free self-guided walking tour down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. This is one of the most famous streets in Scotland, and it’s worth a visit to see its historic buildings, stunning cathedral, castle, and palace.
Home to some of the most famous landmarks in Edinburgh, the Royal Mile is a must on any visit. But there are hidden places and nearby spaces worth discovering, too. This walk will show you narrow closes, secret gardens, tucked-away filming locations, and other highlights.
My route will reveal the best of the city’s historic thoroughfare and take you to some of the quieter places locals love. No matter if you’re here to spend 1 day in Edinburgh or 4 days in Edinburgh, you’ll discover a lot.

7. Hampstead Walking Tour
Back in London, another of my favorite city walks in the UK is my free self-guided walk in Hampstead. This neighborhood is famous for its village-like atmosphere, and it’s home to some of the prettiest streets in London.
From Hampstead High Street to Flask Walk, the shops on Heath Street to the edge of Hampstead Heath, it will show you the highlights of this beautiful part of north London.
