I love exploring Britain’s cities. From grand capitals to seaside beauties, their diversity makes it exciting to discover each one. And one that offers a combination of a stunning cathedral, beautiful waterfront, colorful markets, and independent shops is worth a visit. Which is why I want to tell you about all the great things to do in Ely, England.

Things to Do in Ely

Ely, England

Located just north of Cambridge, Ely is an easy day trip from London. Just over an hour away on the train, it’s straightforward to get to and worth a day out from the capital.

Ely is said to be the second smallest city in England, but it’s home to one of the largest cathedrals. The Bishops of Ely also built an impressive palace here in the 15th century, and two of the original towers still stand in the city center.

Ely is also known for its Oliver Cromwell connections, riverfront scenery, and lively Market Place.

Given its size, the city is easy to get around on foot. I’m meandering all over today and took a great country walk through the surrounding fens last year.

Things to Do in Ely

With a day you can cover all the best things to do in Ely. Given its size and importance, the cathedral is a good place to start. It can be seen from all over the city and surrounding countryside, and it’s a landmark in Cambridgeshire.

But there are a lot of smaller Ely attractions, so it’s worth exploring the side streets and back lanes just as thoroughly as the cathedral. Doing so offers a well-rounded picture of the city, and a pretty one at that.

Visiting Ely Cathedral

I’m taking my own advice and starting my day trip at Ely Cathedral. Visiting this place is one of the most popular things to do in Ely for good reason.

One of England’s biggest cathedrals, it’s known locally as the ‘Ship of the Fens’. The cathedral’s history dates all the way back to Saxon times. It was established by Etheldreda, who was queen, founder, and abbess of Ely.

Work on the present building began in the 11th century, and each successive era has left its mark.

Among other features, the cathedral is known for its unique Octagon Tower, which can be seen throughout Cambridgeshire. Inside, it’s renowned for its stunning ceiling.

Ely Cathedral is also home to the only national museum dedicated to stained glass.

Up a winding stone staircase I came across 100 original stained-glass panels, some of which date back to the early 13th century, others of which are from recent years.

I’m amazed by Ely Cathedral’s beauty, both inside and out. I can’t stop looking up to see the graceful arches, and the tower catches my eye wherever I go in town.

The cathedral is particularly photogenic from Cherry Hill Park and Church Lane. There’s a Russian cannon that was given to the city by Queen Victoria after the Crimean War that makes for a good vantage point, too.

Ely Markets

After Ely Cathedral, one of the best things to do in Ely is go to the markets. There are different markets on different days of the week, and they’ve been going for over 20 years.

From farmers’ markets to craft markets, there’s one in and around the city’s Market Place almost every day.

My current trip coincides with the Craft, Food, and Vintage Market in Ely.

It features stalls selling arts and crafts from local makers, an eclectic mix of antiques, vintage collectables, clothing, books, and street food trucks and stands with Brazilian food, baked goods, bread loaves, artisan coffee, and both fresh produce and prepared meals.

For the adventurous, there’s even a stand with buckets full of pigs’ trotters and ears.

Oliver Cromwell in Ely

Ely is also known for its connections to Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector during the English Civil War in the 17th century. He and his family lived in Ely for a decade, and there are a number of reminders of his presence around town.

The most visible is his house. I pop into Oliver Cromwell’s house in Ely, which has been recreated to show what domestic life was like in the 1600s.

It also has an exhibition on the English Civil War, so it’s a good place to come to learn about that part of the country’s history.

Conveniently, Cromwell’s house doubles as the Tourist Information Center, so it’s where to get your questions answered if you have any.

There’s a gift shop in the lobby with all kinds of Oliver Cromwell-themed mugs, books, paintings, and paraphernalia, too.

Shopping

In addition to attractions, Ely is home to some great independent shops, restaurants, and pubs. Exploring them is one of the most fun things to do in Ely.

I make a beeline for the High Street, where Topping and Company Booksellers quickly becomes my favorite place in the city.

It has floor after floor of books packed into a series of small rooms. Each one has cozy nooks for sitting and enjoying a cup of tea and a good read.

Beyond books, Ely has gift shops like The Eel Catcher’s Daughter. Its range of accessories and bath products has me itching to buy everything in sight.

And that’s to say nothing of the Ely Fudge Company, where Cadbury Creme Egg fudge has me drooling over the counter.

In addition to shops, pubs like the Prince Albert and pretty riverside cafes like Peacocks Tearoom make spending a day in Ely a treat.

River Great Ouse in Ely

And speaking of the river, one of the best things to do in Ely is spend some time on the water. Ely has a beautiful waterfront area with pubs, cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

It’s fun to stand on the riverside or bridge and watch the boats go by. There are even river cruises in the warmer months.

There’s also a path along the River Great Ouse that’s ideal for walks. The whole area has a peaceful feel to it.

Streets and Parks

The streets around the waterfront are some of the prettiest in Ely, too. Historic houses and quiet lanes show off the city’s history, and vintage cars abound.

From Annesdale to Back Lane, Waterside to Willow Walk, there are a lot of beautiful bricks and heritage details to take in.

As far as green spaces go, Jubilee Gardens has smooth paths and Cherry Hill Park is a great place to sit and take in the views of Ely Cathedral.

The Almonry has a secret garden with more cathedral views, and the lawn in front of the cathedral is flanked by grand houses and historic buildings.

Best Things to Do in Ely

I hope this guide has inspired you to visit Ely. It’s a great day out, and a good alternative to some of the more crowded cathedral cities in England.

Given its proximity to Cambridge, it’s easy to combine them for a two-day getaway or weekend trip in the UK. Whatever way you decide to do it, I’m sure you’ll enjoy visiting Ely.

  1. I’m fortunate enough to live in Cambridgeshire and Ely is one of my favourite places to go. Topping & Company and Ely Fudge Company are two visits I make each time, before going for a wander along the waterfront. 🙂

  2. I was lucky enough to visit Ely right before Covid-19 seemingly brought world travel to a halt. I went based on being fascinated by your post on it just a few weeks prior. I absolutely loved it and thought it was the highlight of this particular trip. The cathedral is beautiful, as well as all the views of it from across the green space. I loved the tour of the cathedral and found the story of Etheldreda fascinating. And that bookstore you recommended really is fabulous. Thank you very much for this post! 🙂
