Lady and the Fête

When we moved into our new flat in June, my boyfriend and I wanted to throw a party.  Six months later, our flat was no longer quite so new and we still hadn’t managed to have our fête.

Then Christmas came along.  Everyone we knew was booked seemingly every night with a corporate holiday function, a dinner, or a trip home.  But for some reason we really wanted to have people over right before Christmas.

So we picked a Monday.  I’ve never had a party on a Monday before.  Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a party on a Monday before.  But that made it all the more perfect for a party in the midst of a very busy holiday season.

On Monday night our not-so-new flat was packed with friends from all over London.  My boyfriend and I had a great time serving up home-made mulled wine, holiday mice pies (Americans, they’re made with minced fruit, not meat), shortbread from my grandmother’s recipe, and lots of other Christmas food.

We even had a Christmas tree, compliments of my better half.  He dragged the tree up the hill from South End Green along with nine bottles of wine (one of which was sadly a casualty of carrying too many things at once!).

It was great to see so many friends and nice to finally have our first party at our flat.  I think we’re going to have to make this an annual tradition and see how long we can compete with corporate parties, holiday dinners, ice skating, and our biggest competitor, the Monday night lineup on the BBC.
