Lady’s 15 Pub Walks Near London You’ll Love

Today I want to share my top picks for pub walks near London. If you enjoy escaping the city and getting out to the countryside or the coast, these rambles are perfect for you. They’ll transport you to parts of England full of bucolic landscapes and historic pubs. Most are easy train rides away from London as well. Read on for my list. I’ve included a map, too.

Pub Walks Near London

I’ve done a lot of walks, hikes, and rambles near the UK capital over the years. From country treks to coastal routes, they’ve been fun ways to get to know England on foot.

In doing them I’ve found it doesn’t take much effort to get into picturesque landscapes with cozy pubs near the city, and that it’s a great way to experience Britain.

All the pub walks near London on my list can be done as day trips from the UK capital, so they’re perfect if you don’t have much time. In that sense, they’re ideal for locals and visitors and alike.

Better yet, most can be reached by train from London if you don’t have a car (and one is so close it’s easy to get to on the tube). If you’re new to British rail travel, you can find useful tips on my blog post about how to travel by train in the UK.

1. Moreton-in-Marsh Walk

First on my list of pub walks near London is a Moreton-in-Marsh walk in the Cotswolds. This relatively flat 7-mile (11-kilometer) circular ramble is the perfect way to get outdoors and see the English countryside in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.

Along the route you’ll come across everything from classic Cotswolds villages to whimsical stately homes and a famous arboretum.

Add to that fluffy sheep, fields full of flowers, and picture-pretty cottages, and this one is a real treat. It’s one of my favorite Cotswolds walks.

There’s a great pub in the middle of the walk where you can settle in for lunch or a drink, too. It’s a classic watering hole, and a fun place to take a break on a big day of seeing the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on foot.

This walk is just the thing if you want to explore the Cotswolds without a car, as it starts and ends at the Moreton-in-Marsh train station. There are direct rail services from London, so you don’t even have to change en route.

2. Surrey Walk

My second pub walk near London is a station-to-station one in Surrey. It’s called Walk the Chalk, and the 7-mile (11-kilometer) route goes from Dorking to Godalming.

The hike starts at Dorking station, from where you’ll walk through chalk landscapes and woodland areas in the English countryside south of London.

You’ll pass wildlife habitats and World War II pillboxes en route. You’ll even get to take in great views from a vista point called God’s Seat.

There’s a fun country pub in Godalming to enjoy at the end of the walk, too. If you’re lucky enough to do this one on a sunny day, you can sit outside in the expansive garden and enjoy a big lunch to reward yourself for your efforts.

This ramble in Surrey is ideal if you want to do a country walk that’s under an hour from London by train. It makes for an easy day out from the UK capital, and it’s great if you don’t have a car.

3. Folkestone to Dover Walk

Next on my list of the best pub walks near London is a hike on the English seaside in Kent. It’s a 9.2-mile (14.8-kilometer) route, and it’s one of my top picks for coastal walks near London.

The path will take you from Folkestone station to Dover station, so it’s an easy one to do by train. The trail hugs the shoreline and ascends the chalk cliffs to offer panoramic views across the English Channel.

This walk is a good one if you like historic streets, as Folkestone is full of lanes with pretty houses and shops. It’s also ideal if you love the seaside, as it goes past lots of beaches and waterfront areas. They’re some of the best places to visit in Kent.

There’s one steep hill climb in the middle, so it’s perfect if you like a challenge, too. You’ll be rewarded with a great pub lunch at a local watering hole in Capel-le-Ferne when you reach the top.

I recommend doing this loveliest of walks in Kent on a sunny day if you can. That’s not least because you’ll be able to see France in the distance if it’s clear.

4. Southbourne to Chichester Walk

The fourth of my pub walks near London is down in West Sussex. The 11.5-mile (18.5-kilometer) route will take you from Southbourne to Chichester. The latter is a famous cathedral city in England.

The route goes around the channels in the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It will take you by waterfront scenery and pretty villages like Bosham. It also offers a reward at the end in the form of Chichester Cathedral.

This walk is for you if you love history, villages, and being by the sea. There’s a pub with a beer garden in the middle, so it’s a perfect one if you want to have lunch as you go.

The route for this walk is also completely flat, so it’s another good one to go on if you don’t like hills.

As with many of the others on my list, this is one of the best walks near London by train. It starts right at Southbourne station and ends at Chichester station.

5. Overton Circular Walk

Next on my list of pub walks near London is a circular one starting and ending in the village of Overton in Hampshire. The 11.6-mile (18.7-kilometer) route will take you by rivers, through fields, and next to adorable sheep.

It will also guide you to the birthplace of Jane Austen, which is a good excuse to pay homage to one of Britain’s most famous writers. Elsewhere, you might spot a herd of buffalo used for making mozzarella.

This ramble is a fun one if you like a mix of countryside and village charm, a relatively short train ride, and a circular route that makes transportation simple and straightforward.

The path is mostly flat the whole way, so it’s ideal if you like a ramble with even ground. There’s a lot of variation in the scenery, too, so you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to things to see.

There’s a pub in middle, so it’s a great one if you want to have a big lunch en route. You can sit outside in the garden if it’s a sunny day.

6. Goring Circular Walk

My next pub walk near London is a circular route in the Berkshire countryside. This 11.2-mile (18-kilometer) hike will take you from Goring and Streatley station through beautiful scenery and back.

The walk starts in the village of Goring on the River Thames. From there it winds past impressive country houses and through golden fields with woodland areas in between.

This walk is perfect if you like countryside, villages, and a circular route. It’s an easy one to do by train as well, so it’s great if you don’t want to drive.

There are a few hills along the trail (including one steep one), so it’s ideal if you enjoy a mix of terrain and varied topography.

Best of all, there’s a great lunch stop at a 15th-century pub. Not only is it atmospheric, but also a great place to enjoy a traditional meal on a big ramble. You can stop for a drink at a riverside restaurant at the end if you want more, too.

7. Oak Trail in Epping Forest

Next on my list of pub walks near London is a circular route in Epping Forest, a woodland area on the border of Greater London. The 6.6-mile (10.6-kilometer) Oak Trail is one of nine signposted rambles here.

The route begins and ends at the Theydon Bois tube station, so it’s easy to get to from central London without leaving the Underground.

The walk will take you into the village of Theydon Bois and out to the English countryside. You’ll go through pastures and forest land, and you’ll even pass alongside the Epping Forest Deer Sanctuary.

The trail is mostly flat, so it’s a great one if you want a gentle ramble. There’s a pub in Theydon Bois where you can enjoy lunch or a drink at the end, too.

This one is for you if you want to go on a country walk near London that’s accessible by tube. It’s less than 30 minutes from some stations in the city, and it’s one of the easiest walks to get to from the city.

8. Marlow Walk

Next on my list of pub walks near London is a circular one that starts and ends in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. This 6.3-mile (10.1-kilometer) ramble is a great one to do if you want to walk along a flat route that’s easily accessible by train from the city.

The trail goes along the River Thames before veering off into woodland areas. There are Tudor houses, footbridges, and historic churches to see along the way. It’s one of my top picks for circular walks near London.

This one is just the thing if you want to explore the Chiltern Hills and see some of Marlow at the beginning and end. It’s also shorter than some of my other walks (and flatter), so it’s ideal if you want something a bit easier.

Best of all, Marlow is home to The Hand & Flowers, one of a handful of Michelin-starred pubs near London. In fact, it’s the only pub in the UK with two Michelin stars.

If you want a real treat, you can have lunch here after your walk. It’s a great place to reward yourself for your efforts and try some of the best pub food in Britain while you’re at it.

9. Tring Walk

Next on my list of the best pub walks near London is a circular one in Tring, Hertfordshire. This 8.5-mile (14-kilometer) route in The Chilterns is perfect for immersing yourself in the UK’s unique chalk grassland scenery.

As you hike you’ll pass through nature reserves, over rolling hills, and up to the famous Ivinghoe Beacon. There are spectacular views across the English countryside from the top.

This country walk is just the thing if you want something relatively close to London and you enjoy hiking a few hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It’s an easy walk to do by train as well. The route starts and ends at Tring station, so it’s straightforward to get here from London.

There are great pubs for lunch in the town of Tring, too. I had lunch at one of them when I did this walk, and I loved being able to sit outside and enjoy a big meal at the end of the hike.

10. Charlbury Walk

Next on my list of the best pub walks near London is a circular one in the Cotswolds. The 4-mile (6.4-kilometer) route will take you into the picturesque town of Charlbury and through the ancient Wychwood Forest.

Much of this hike follows the Oxfordshire Way. It’s a famous long-distance trail from Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire to the Thames in Henley. Along the way it crosses over the River Evenlode and passes wooded groves and copses.

This one is for you if you’re looking for a shorter walk and you don’t have a car, as there’s a train station in Charlbury.

There are great pubs where you can have lunch in town at the beginning or end of this walk, too. I enjoyed a classic lunch with a friend in a historic one with a fireplace when I did this hike, and I loved it.

11. Kingham Walk

Next on my list of pub walks near London is a circular walk in Kingham. This 10.5-mile (17-kilometer) walk will take you into the English countryside and out to some quintessential Cotswolds villages and towns.

The route will guide you through bucolic fields full of sheep, into Chipping Norton for some exploration, and back to Kingham at the end.

Along the way you’ll go up gentle hills, over culverts, through stiles, and past ha-has. You’ll also walk by the unique Bliss Tweed Mill, a historic building that looks like a cross between a stately home and a factory.

This walk is for you if you’re looking for a longer route with lots of countryside scenery and a beautiful pub for lunch in the village of Churchill. It’s also ideal if you don’t want to drive, as there’s a train station in Kingham.

12. Sevenoaks to Westerham Walk

My next pub walk near London is a point-to-point ramble in Kent. This 11.6-mile (18.7-kilometer) hike will bring you from Sevenoaks station past stately homes and through wooded areas to Westerham, which is known for its Winston Churchill connections.

The route starts in the town center in Sevenoaks and quickly veers off into Knole Park. Here you’ll pass by Knole, a famous stately home near London.

The trail then goes through fields and forested areas before passing through a National Trust garden and going by classic country cottages.

This one is perfect if you want to do one of the closest walks to London. It’s less than a 30-minute train ride from the capital. At the end you can pre-book a taxi from Westerham back to Sevenoaks station.

The path is fairly flat apart from one steep hill with steps, so it’s relatively forgiving in terms of topography. There’s a great pub in Westerham where you can get lunch or drinks at the end, and other pubs dotted along the way.

13. West Chiltington Walk

My next pub walk near London is in West Chiltington. A 5.7-mile (9.2-kilometer) ramble, it offers a great introduction to the villages and vineyards of West Sussex.

From West Chiltington, the route will take you through bovine-studded fields and up gentle hills with vines. You’ll go past picture-pretty cottages and country houses, alongside ponds, and through fairy-tale woods full of flowers.

This West Sussex walk features a range of terrain, a few gentle hills, and lots of beautiful scenery. You’ll pass by wineries, too, so you can book a tasting if you want to stop mid-ramble.

This walk is great if you like to soak up the beauty of the English countryside. While it’s not near a train station, you can take a train to Horsham or Pulborough and a taxi the rest of the way.

There’s a great pub in West Chiltington where you can have lunch after the ramble. It has an outdoor area that’s perfect for sunny days.

14. Burford Walk

Next on my list of pub walks near London is a Burford circular walk in the Cotswolds. This one follows a flat 5-mile (8-kilometer) route through villages, across fields, and along the River Windrush.

As you go, you’ll spot historic churches, picturesque thatched-roof cottages, and bucolic waterfront scenery.

This hike is for you if you want to explore the Cotswolds on foot and take in some of the lesser-known villages in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It’s also a great one if you enjoy a shorter walk and a hearty lunch. There are great pubs in Burford where you can reward yourself with a meal at the end of your hike. If you want to stay a night, The Angel at Burford is a pub with rooms.

While there’s no train station in Burford, you can take the train to Charlbury and pre-book a taxi to and from Buford to do this one without a car. You can even combine this one with my Charlbury walk if you want to do two shorter walks in one day.

15. Country Walk Near Cambridge

The next of my pub walks near London is close to Cambridge. The 14-mile (22.5-kilometer) circular route starts and ends in Wendens Ambo, a colorful village with thatched-roof cottages.

The walk itself is beautiful. It goes through some of the prettiest villages near London. The highlight is Arkesden, which is straight out of a fairy tale.

This walk features country churches and bucolic streams galore, not to mention a great country pub for lunch in the middle of the route.

This one is perfect if you enjoy the ease of beginning and ending in the same spot and taking in storybook views along the way.

It’s also an easy train ride from London, if a bit longer than some of the others in this post. The countryside scenery makes the journey go faster, though.
