Whether you’re wondering where to live in London, where to hang out in London, or where to stay in London, there’s a variety of hipster neighborhoods in London to choose from. Whether you prefer cool places in the East End or trendy areas south of the river, there’s a perfect fit for you. I’ve included a map as well.

One of my favorite things about London is that there’s a place for everyone. Whatever your personal style, budget, taste, or commute (if you even have one), there’s a hipster London neighborhood for you.

Given there are so many choices, I want to give you an idea of your options and some good ideas for cool neighborhoods in London. If you’re asking yourself “where do London hipsters live?” you’ll find the answer here.

Hipster London Neighborhoods: South

I’ll start my hipster London guide in the south. A lot of London’s hottest neighborhoods are located here. The area south of the Thames has changed a lot over the last few decades, and today it’s home to some of the trendiest places in the UK capital.

Market in Peckham

1. Deptford

First on my list of hipster London neighborhoods is Deptford. This up-and-coming part of south London is known throughout the city for its cool coffee shops, great local market, tattoo studios, and independent stores.

Located right next to Greenwich on the Thames, Deptford is an ideal area if you’re into all things new and on-trend. From pop-ups to pubs and railway arches bursting with cafes, this part of the city has everything you need.

2. Peckham

Peckham is next on my list of hipster London neighborhoods. One of the city’s coolest areas, this place is known for its amazing nightlife scene.

Peckham is home to some of the most famous rooftop bars in south London, which is to say nothing of pop-up markets and shops.

Peckham also has big green swathes like Peckham Rye Park, independent boutiques and restaurants on Bellenden Road, and creative spaces in behemoths like the Bussey Building. There’s even a place that makes mead here.

3. Brixton

Brixton is another of the coolest places in London. It’s so hot it’s even been rated the most hipster area of London.

This multicultural neighborhood is known for colorful south London markets like Pop Brixton, Brixton Village, and Brixton Market.

The area has a fun nightlife scene as well. There are lots of bars and restaurants here, not to mention some of the best pubs in south London.

The prevalence of street art, gigs, and arthouse films at the famous Ritzy cinema means there’s something new to see on every visit, too.

My hipster London guide continues in the east. A lot of hipster neighborhoods in London are in the East End. Whether you want somewhere more central or more up-and-coming, there’s a place for you.

4. Hackney Wick

Hackney Wick is one of the most hipster areas of London for 20-somethings and young professionals. One of the coolest areas in the UK capital, this place is known for its great nightlife and trendy bars.

Located on the Lee Navigation canal, this area is full of converted industrial spaces with artists’ studios, coffee shops, and independent breweries. It’s one of the hottest areas to live in London.

Hackney Wick is also near large green spaces like Victoria Park and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, so there are plenty of places to channel your inner hipster outdoors here.

5. Hackney

Next on my list of the best hipster London neighborhoods is Hackney. This expansive area in the East End is home to places like Hoxton, Haggerston, and Dalston, all of which have solidly hip credentials.

Hackney is packed with bars hidden under railway arches, on-the-pulse nightlife, cutting-edge restaurants, delicious bakeries, and cool coffee shops.

Hackney also features markets like Chatsworth Road Market, Mare Street Market, Broadway Market, Netil Market, and the Columbia Road Flower Market. There are green spaces like Victoria Park and London Fields here as well.

This area has become an increasingly popular place to live in London in recent years, especially as nearby Shoreditch has gentrified and become more mainstream.

6. Tottenham

Tottenham is next on my list of hipster London neighborhoods. This up-and-coming place in the northeast of the city is home to all things hot and trendy.

The high street and the areas that surround it are packed with hip cafes, bars, and vegan restaurants. They’re great places to soak up the local atmosphere.

The River Lea and Tottenham Marshes add a dash of nature to the neighborhood, too. They’re fun places to get outdoors and into the elements here.

7. Spitalfields

Last on my list of the most hipster London neighborhoods is Spitalfields. From the colorful markets to the street art, record stores, and vintage shops around Brick Lane, this is one of the most exciting parts of London.

This area also has atmospheric side streets and secret lanes to discover. Puma Court and Princelet Street are two of my favorites. The 18th-century Huguenot silk weavers’ houses on the latter are stunning.

There are new restaurants, bars, and pop-ups opening here all the time, making Spitalfields one of the hippest neighborhoods in London. Rotating events and food trucks in and around The Truman Brewery keep things exciting as well.
