Today I want to share my guide to Brixton market with you. Down in south London, this place is a great spot to eat, drink, dine, and shop.

Brixton Market Guide

One of the things I love about London is that every neighborhood has a different personality.

If I’m feeling fancy, I go to Chelsea. If I’m in a hipster mood, I head to Shoreditch. And if I want authentic markets and great restaurants, it’s Brixton.

I’ve only been to Brixton once in all my years of living in London, but the diverse neighborhood is so trendy I can’t resist a trip back. Hopping on the Victoria line, I take the tube south and emerge in the sunshine of Brixton Market.

Brixton Makers’ Market

My first stop is the monthly Brixton Makers’ Market on Brixton Station Road. As the name implies, this row of stalls features the arts and crafts of creative types.

I pass vendors selling handmade clothing and Jamaican patties, and stop to say hello to friends running a stall full of pretty knitwear.

Turning the corner, I continue my Brixton market exploration with a visit to the eclectic market on Pope’s Road and Electric Avenue.

This one is a bit more of a local market, with everything from household cleaning products to fresh fruit and brightly-colored vegetables for sale.

Brixton Arcades

Back by the station, I turn my attention to the famous Brixton markets in the area’s covered arcades. Reliance Arcade is a tiny narrow passage with shops on either side.

Across the street I find myself in the larger, more open space of Market Row. It’s there I discover why I’ll love Brixton’s markets so much: the restaurants.

First I come across Franco Manca, famous for its pizza. Then there are cute cafes. Interspersed among them are food shops with baskets of chorizo outside and stores overflowing with freshly baked bread.

Nearby are more Brixton market restaurants, and at the end are funky vintage shops that give the market an authentic Brixton feel.

Brixton Village

Crossing the street, I arrive at the most famous Brixton market of all: Brixton Village. What was a semi-abandoned covered market years ago is now one of London’s best markets for food lovers.

The space features a unique mix of hip restaurants and traditional vendors that attracts people from all over London.

I start with a walk through the market to get the lay of the land. Pretty cafes like Agile Rabbit give way to shops like Yammy’s Boutique and Brixton-themed Circus Brixton.

Table with a pitcher at Brixton Village

Popular restaurants like Brixton Cornercopia have tables that spill out into the walkways, and famous eateries like Honest Burgers have people lining up to get a taste.

I am one of them. Having heard tell of their legendary burgers, I put my name on the list and wander the market until my phone buzzes to tell me my table is ready.

Along the way, I pass cafes advertising their brunch offerings, restaurants with mouth-watering menus, and eateries that give nods to Brixton’s diverse international community.

Plastic Teapots at Brixton Village

There are innumerable other Brixton market restaurants and shops to explore, but my rumbling stomach and buzzing phone tell me it’s time for a burger.

I take my seat in the tiny room and savor my cheeseburger and rosemary chips while watching the world go by under the arcade.

The burger is good, and the only disappointment is that I’m full after eating it.

Best Brixton Markets

There are so many other places I want to try, but I’ll have to return to sample more of the Brixton market restaurants and cafes. Perhaps on a day when I’m in a hungry mood.
