Where is the most remote place in the UK? I’ve been wondering that these days. Because my feet are itching to travel, and I know the first place I’ll feel like going is the one nobody else is. It’s inspired me to bring you A Lady in London’s guide to the most off-the-beaten-path places in Britain.

Most Remote Place in the UK

Most Remote Place in the UK

There are lots of ways to define the most remote place in the UK. Is it an island in the Atlantic? An isolated peninsula on mainland Britain? The least populated county in Wales?

Since there are many ways to look at the idea and everyone has a different definition of what remote travel bliss means, I want to bring you a range of options.

I hope you find one (or three) that appeals to you for a country walk or weekend trip someday.

Lunga, Scotland

Most Remote Place in the UK: Scotland

I’ll start my list in Scotland because I tend to think of it when I think of remote parts of Britain.

Maybe it’s the rugged highland scenery I’ve seen in Glen Coe or sparsely populated islands like Coll I’ve sailed to in the Hebrides. Either way, this part of the UK always sparks my wanderlust for remote places.

Inverie

When it comes to the mainland, Inverie on the Knoydart Peninsula in Scotland is often referred to as the UK’s most remote location.

This is primarily because the few miles of single-track road here aren’t connected to the national road network. Which means it’s only accessible via an 18-mile hike or by boat.

While there’s a ferry from Mallaig to Inverie, I’ve been here on a sailing trip in the Scottish Hebrides.

I can personally attest to both its remoteness and its beauty. With the stunning coastline, beautiful sunsets, and quiet waters of Loch Nevis, Inverie is a great place to get away from it all.

But you don’t have to leave every comfort behind here. Inverie is also home to the most remote pub in the UK. The Old Forge is a fun place to get a drink and sit outside by the water to take in the scenery.

Most Remote Place in the UK: England

So where is the most remote place in the UK when it comes to England? I always think of Northumberland when it comes to getting off the beaten path in England.

But in reality, a wild Yorkshire moor is a strong contender, as is a remote island off the Cornish coast.

Yorkshire Dales National Park

According to the British Ordnance Survey, Riggs Moor on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the most remote place in England. It sits farther from a road than anywhere else on the mainland in this part of the UK.

While I haven’t visited Riggs Moor itself, I’ve spent a few days exploring the Yorkshire Dales. I stayed in a great little cottage, and I can vouch for the feeling of being far from the crowds here.

I climbed Ingleborough, the second highest peak in the Yorkshire Dales, and barely saw another soul on the way up.

I drove through remote landscapes and past stunning sights like the Ribblehead Viaduct, and saw far more sheep than cars.

If you want to get away from it all, a trip to the Yorkshire Dales is a good way to do it.

Bryher

If islands are more your thing, Bryher can be considered the most remote place in the UK when it comes to England.

One of the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall, this island feels a million miles from civilization.

I went to Bryher when I visited the archipelago, and it felt like one of the most untouched places I’d traveled in Britain. I loved how a walk along the coast led me to a lone red phone booth and a golden goat.

But like Inverie, I also loved that there’s still good food and drink to be had here. The Fraggle Rock Bar has a cozy dining room overlooking a terrace and great fish and chips.

Most Remote Place in the UK: Wales

So how about Wales? This part of Britain always feels remote to me, what with its stunning natural scenery and beautiful coastline.

From the beaches on Anglesey to the stark beauty along the Gower Peninsula, there are a lot of remote places in Britain here.

Path to Pen y Fan

Brecon Beacons National Park

But according to a guide called “Y Pellennig: The Remotest Hills of Wales”, Tyle Garw in the Brecon Beacons National Park is the most remote place in the UK when it comes to Wales.

Why? It’s the most remote hill on mainland Wales. Tyle Garw is farther from the nearest road than any of its counterparts.

While I haven’t climbed Tyle Garw, I’ve spent a lot of time in the Brecon Beacons. As with the other places on my list, I can attest to the remoteness of the national park and to its beauty.

I’ve hiked Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in south Wales. It offers spectacular scenery and beautiful views.

On a winter weekend in Wales I did the Henry Vaughan Walk, a 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) signposted trail celebrating a local 17th-century poet.

I also rambled along the Usk Valley Walk, a marked public footpath through the green hills that goes by sheep-filled pastures and over streams.

And on a summer weekend in Wales I saw waterfalls and other magical highlights of the Brecon Beacons. And nobody else was around.
