Summer has arrived. London’s weather is cheerfully sunny, and the forecast looks even brighter. I’m spending as much time as I can outdoors, and some of my favorite places to do so are pubs with beer gardens in London.
Pubs with Beer Gardens in London
From Notting Hill to Hampstead, Kensington to Camden, London has no shortage of watering holes with outdoor spaces.
Riverside pubs and rooftop bars are dotted throughout the city, but when it comes to proper beer gardens there are a few pubs in London that stand out.
1. Windsor Castle Pub Beer Garden
The beer garden at the Windsor Castle pub in Kensington is one of my favorites. From the “Our Lovely Garden” sign at the entrance to the urns full of flowers, this is one of the prettiest in the city.
I’ve spent many an afternoon here sipping Pimm’s and other classic English drinks, and it’s hard to find another pub that compares.
2. The Sun in Splendour Pub Beer Garden
Just down the road in Notting Hill, The Sun in Splendour first lured me in with its “Secret Garden” sign. Ooooh, secret garden. I had to see that.
And a lovely secret it is. Full of colorful tables and growing vines, this beer garden is a gem.
3. The Stag Pub Beer Garden
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the beer garden at The Stag pub in South End Green is one of the biggest I’ve seen in London. With rows of picnic tables and a full outdoor bar, this is the place to be on a sunny day.
I would know. When I lived in Hampstead I spent a lot of time here. From birthday parties to drinks with friends, it fit the bill for many occasions.
4. The Garden Gate Pub Beer Garden
Just up the street, The Garden Gate is another of the legendary pubs with beer gardens in London. As the name implies, its outdoor space is full of greenery.
It’s fitting, too, because the pub is located on the edge of Hampstead Heath, one of the city’s biggest and wildest parks. I’ve passed many an evening here after a walk in Hampstead Heath.
5. The Edinboro Castle Pub Beer Garden
In Camden, The Edinboro Castle pub has another of the city’s great beer gardens.
Perfect for a pint before braving the crowds in the nearby Camden Market, this one has everything from sunny tables to covered areas (because, you know, it rains sometimes).
6. The Engineer Pub Beer Garden
Nearby in Primrose Hill, The Engineer’s beer garden is one of my all-time favorites. With tables filling each leafy nook, its charm lures me in every time.
7. The Crown and Shuttle Pub Beer Garden
Out east in Shoreditch, The Crown and Shuttle has another impressive beer garden.
Not only does it have all the tables one could need for a London summer day, but also pretty doors and a bar with hearts. Swoon.
8. Richard the First Pub Beer Garden
I love heading to Greenwich on a sunny day, and when I go there’s no better place to sit outdoors than in one of the neighborhood’s beer gardens.
I love the one at Richard the First, not least because it’s on my Greenwich walk route. It’s the perfect place to stop along the way.
