Today I want to share my list of the best day trips from San Francisco for your style. My home city is a great jumping-off point for a variety of places in and around the Bay Area. Whether you want to go wine tasting, drive to a beach, hike a mountain, or explore a city, there’s a perfect day trip for your personal taste. Read on to find out which one is best for you. There’s a map, too.
Best Day Trips from San Francisco
When it comes to the best day trips from San Francisco, there’s no right or wrong place to go. And with such a range of options, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
But there are some simple ways to narrow down the choices and pick a San Francisco day trip that works for your travel style. It usually comes down to identifying your interests and picking the one that fits best.
I’ve done all the day trips on my list at least once (and many of them more than that), and I can personally vouch for how enjoyable they are. I hope you like them as much as I do.
1. Napa Valley
I’ll start my list of the best day trips from San Francisco with Napa Valley. It’s one of the most famous places near the city, not least because of its world-class wines.
Most people visit Napa to go wine tasting, but there’s more to the area than just grapes. From the Michelin-starred restaurants in Yountville (think The French Laundry) to the shopping in downtown Napa, there’s a lot to do in the area.

2. Sonoma Valley
Right next to Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. Slightly more laid-back than Napa, it’s preferred by many locals. The wines are just as good, and the scenery is beautiful.
Beyond wine, the Sonoma Valley is packed with hiking trails, great shopping and dining in places like Healdsburg and downtown Sonoma, and points of historic interest like Mission San Francisco Solano and Jack London Historic State Park.
Out on the Pacific Ocean, the Sonoma Coast offers boulder-studded beaches and miles of hiking trails. It’s also home to Bodega, where scenes from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds were filmed.

3. Tomales Bay Day Trip
Next on my list of the best day trips from San Francisco is Tomales Bay. Located north of the city in Marin County, this skinny 15-mile (24-kilometer) inlet is famous for oysters and hiking.
My favorite place in Tomales Bay is the Hog Island Oyster Co. This spot in Marshall is famous for both its bivalves and its waterfront scenery. It’s a great place to take in the views and shuck oysters at the source.
On one trip I did a special Whole Hog Tour. It included a guided oyster farm visit, tasting, and master class in shucking. Afterwards I went to Nick’s Cove for lunch on the pier.

4. Point Reyes
Point Reyes is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. Famous for the Point Reyes Lighthouse, this peninsula in Marin County offers whale-watching opportunities, hiking and biking trails, and great wildlife spotting.
This is the day trip for you if you love outdoor activities and seeing local fauna in equal measure.
5. Stinson Beach
Also in Marin County, Stinson Beach is one of the most famous stretches of coastline north of the city. It’s one of the best day trips from San Francisco for its white sand and good swimming.
Located right next to Mount Tamalpais State Park, the beach has great views of the hills and stunning oceanfront scenery around it. You can spot dolphins, seals, and whales from the shoreline, too.
This is the day trip for you if you love beaches and marine life in equal measure.
6. Muir Woods National Monument
Next on my list of the best day trips from San Francisco is Muir Woods National Monument. This place is known for its giant redwood trees and miles of hiking trails. It’s one of my favorite places to get into nature near the city.
Famous places in Muir Woods include Cathedral Grove, Bohemian Grove, Redwood Creek, and the German-style Tourist Club. Trails like the Ben Johnson Trail and the Dipsea Trail offer panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and neighboring Mount Tamalpais, too.
Speaking of the ocean, if you like both hiking and water, you can round out your visit with a trip to Muir Beach at the end.
This is the day trip for you if you love hiking and redwoods in equal measure.
7. Mount Tamalpais Day Trip
Right by Muir Woods, Mount Tamalpais is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. There are miles of hiking trails in Mount Tamalpais State Park, some of which lead to the top of the 2,571-foot (784-meter) peak.
I love hiking on Mount Tam (as locals call it) for the challenging hills and rewarding ocean views. It’s a fun place to get outdoors just north of the city.

8. Marin Headlands
Just north of the city, the Marin Headlands make for one of many easy day trips from San Francisco.
This 5-mile (8-kilometer) stretch of coastal land not only offers some of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge, but also some of the top hiking and coastal scenery in the North Bay.
I love driving over the bridge to walk in the headlands or visit the beaches along the waterfront. The 19th-century Point Bonita Lighthouse is a scenic spot, too.
This is the day trip for you if you love the ocean and want to stay close to the city.
9. Sausalito
Just north of the city, Sausalito is another of the best San Francisco day trips. This city in Marin County is known for its waterfront shops and restaurants, houseboats, and stunning views of the San Francisco skyline.
One of the great San Francisco highlights is renting a bike and cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. After a day of exploring, you can take the ferry back to San Francisco. It’s a great way to get some exercise and see the North Bay.
I’ve been going to Sausalito since I was a child, and I love how much there is to do here. From waterfront boutiques to stand-up paddle boarding, there’s a range of activities on offer.
This is the day trip for you if you love seaside charm and city views in equal measure.
10. Tiburon
Not far from Sausalito, Tiburon is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. This small town on the San Francisco Bay is known for its shopping and dining.
Sam’s Anchor Cafe is a perennial favorite. Locals flock to Sam’s on sunny days to sit out on the deck and soak up the waterfront atmosphere. The boutiques around it are great for retail therapy, too.
Tiburon is accessible by ferry from San Francisco, and it’s easy to combine it with a trip to Sausalito (you can take the ferry between them).
This is the day trip for you if you love waterside charm and a slow pace of life in equal measure.
11. Angel Island Day Trip
Angel Island is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. The largest natural island in the San Francisco Bay, it not only offers great hiking and biking, but also some of the best views of the surrounding area.
It’s easy to get to Angel Island by ferry from San Francisco. The quick ride offers scenic panoramas of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the city skyline.
Once you’re on the island, there are miles of hiking trails to enjoy. I used to go as a child, and I have great memories of walking all over the place. It’s a great place to get into nature a stone’s throw from the city.

12. Berkeley
If you love cities, Berkeley is one of the best day trips from San Francisco. This university city in the East Bay is famous for its counterculture, food scene, and campus life.
I’ve been going to Berkeley since I was a teenager, and I love its mix of vintage shops, restaurants, street art, and beautiful college buildings.
Telegraph Avenue is a fun place to explore Berkeley’s alternative scene, and North Berkeley has some of the best restaurants in the Bay Area.
Berkeley is conveniently accessible from San Francisco by the BART train, which makes it an easy day trip from San Francisco.
This is the trip for you if you love urban exploration and counterculture in equal measure.
13. Oakland
Oakland is another famous city in the East Bay. It’s one of the best day trips from San Francisco for its exciting downtown and great cultural highlights.
From the waterfront restaurants and bars in Jack London Square to the markets and shops in Old Oakland, there’s a lot to love here.
Add to that the Oakland Museum of California and the creative boutiques and restaurants in the Temescal Alleys, and this city has a lot to offer.
Like Berkeley, Oakland is accessible from San Francisco by the BART train. It’s a quick and easy way to get the East Bay.

14. Sacramento Day Trip
The state capital of California, Sacramento is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. This city is known for its history, but it’s also home to great independent bars, restaurants, and coffee shops.
The R Street Corridor is where street art, markets, and bars bring historic streets to life. Midtown is home to good places to eat and drink, and there are excellent farmers’ markets throughout the city.
When it comes to history, Old Sacramento, Sutter’s Fort, the Historic Governor’s Mansion, and the Leland Stanford House all give a nod to Sacramento’s past.
This is the day trip for you if you love cities and heritage in equal measure.
15. Silicon Valley
I grew up in Silicon Valley, and I still consider it one of the best day trips from San Francisco.
Comprised of a string of suburbs between San Francisco and San Jose, the area is big enough to offer something for everyone. Whether you want to see the tech highlights, go shopping, or take a hike, there are lots of things to do here.
My favorite places are downtown Palo Alto, downtown Menlo Park, and the hiking trails in Portola Valley and Woodside. Palo Alto and Menlo Park have lots of shops and restaurants, and Portola Valley and Woodside offer extensive hiking opportunities.
Tech lovers will enjoy The Tech Interactive in San Jose and the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. College fans will have fun walking around the Stanford University campus.
Many places in Silicon Valley are accessible from San Francisco by the CalTrain rail line, including downtown Menlo Park and downtown Palo Alto.

16. Half Moon Bay and Pescadero
To the south of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay and Pescadero make a great day trip. These coastal gems have some of the best beaches in San Mateo County.
And that’s to say nothing of the food. Pescadero is famous for Duarte’s Tavern, where artichoke soup and sweet pies go down a treat. Half Moon Bay has excellent seafood restaurants on the coast and great places to eat on Main Street.

17. Santa Cruz
Down the coast from Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, Santa Cruz is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. This city is famous for surfing and beaches, and it’s a fun place to soak up the sun and ride the Pacific Ocean waves.
There’s a lot more to it than just sea and sand, though. There’s great shopping and dining in the city, and Santa Cruz has an abundance of beautiful historic houses to admire.
I grew up sailing in Santa Cruz, and I’ve always loved the city. It has a vibrant beach culture and a laid-back atmosphere. Neighboring places like Aptos and Capitola are worth a visit, too.

18. Monterey Day Trip
South of Santa Cruz, Monterey is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. This city on the Central Coast is famous for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is home to an abundance of marine life.
It’s also home to Cannery Row, which once lay at the heart of the sardine-packing industry (if you’ve read John Steinbeck’s work, you’ll know all about it). Today this waterfront area is packed with restaurants, shops, and bars.
I spent a lot of time in Monterey as a child, and in addition to the city I loved nearby places like Lovers Point Park, Asilomar State Beach, and Pacific Grove.
This is the day trip for you if you love aquariums and waterfront scenery in equal measure.
19. Carmel-by-the-Sea
Just south of Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea is another of the best day trips from San Francisco. Full of chocolate-box streets lined with thatched-roof shops, it feels like an English seaside village.
Carmel is also home to beautiful beaches, coastal trails, the historic Carmel Mission, and great wine tasting.

Best Day Trips from San Francisco
I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of the best day trips from San Francisco and that it’s helped you find the right one for your style. These are some of my favorite places in my home state, and I’m sure you’ll like visiting them as much as I have.
There are lots of places to go further afield, too. Some would include Yosemite National Park in a list of day trips from San Francisco, but given it’s a 3-hour drive each way, it’s easier to do it as an overnight trip (or better yet, a multi-day trip).
The same goes for places like Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, and Mendocino, which deserve at least a night or two.
