Today I want to share my itinerary for 5 days in St Croix, USVI with you. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, it’s also the least visited. That means St Croix is a great place to soak up the sun on the Caribbean Sea away from the crowds that can fill neighboring St Thomas and St John. Full of beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and laid-back island atmosphere, St Croix is the perfect getaway. Let me show you why.
5 Days in St Croix
I’m spending 5 days in St Croix to get some much-needed sunshine and see what this part of the United States has to offer. I’m staying with locals who know the island well, and I can’t wait to experience some of the best things to do in St Croix with them.
St Croix Itinerary: Day 1
My flight arrives in the late afternoon, and we head to their house after I land. It’s near Christiansted, one of the main towns on the island.
It’s a great area to stay in St Croix, and as soon as I catch a glimpse of the views of the Caribbean Sea and lush hills from the terrace I know I’m going to have a good time here.
St Croix Itinerary: Day 2
The next morning our 5 days in St Croix continue with a trip to Christiansted.
We start by shopping in town, picking up some clothes at Southern Saint and admiring the jewelry at ib designs. We can’t resist buying some hot sauce and guava jam at a shop selling local products, too.
When lunchtime comes we make our way to a local restaurant in Christiansted that’s hiding in plain sight. We sit outside on the terrace and tuck into heaping plates of falafel with frozen guava pie for dessert.
After lunch we walk along the boardwalk and take in the beach bars and restaurants in Christiansted. At the end we come to the historic Fort Christiansvaern and a collection of bright yellow buildings redolent of St Croix’s Danish colonial past.
They’re not the only heritage buildings in town, either. We spot a number of churches and old government buildings interspersed among the colorful shopfronts around the town.
When we’re done shopping and sightseeing, our 5 days in St Croix continue with a trip to Point Udall for sunset. We park the car by the sundial monument and enjoy the views of Buck Island from the easternmost point in the United States.
When night falls we drive over to Duggan’s Reef restaurant in Teague Bay. Its walls are lined with college pennants and it has a great casual atmosphere. Lobster is the specialty here, and we all enjoy heaping plates of it.
St Croix Itinerary: Day 3
The next morning our 5 days in St Croix continue with a trip to the beach. We head to The Buccaneer, a hotel near Christiansted with great beaches.
When we arrive, we settle into lounge chairs on the sand, sipping pina coladas and soaking up the island paradise for the day.
We have lunch at the beachfront restaurant, The Mermaid, where everything from crab cakes to conch fritters goes down a treat. The mahi with fried plantains is delicious, too.
In the afternoon we play beach games and explore The Buccaneer’s other stretch of sand. Afterwards we walk up to the historic sugar mill by the lobby before heading back to the house to get ready for the evening’s activities.
The first of them is a bioluminescent kayak tour in Salt River Bay. It’s a unique excursion that involves kayaking over to a bay full of microorganisms that glow in the dark.
Our see-through kayak allows us to view the neon green and sparkling white water as we paddle under the stars. We also get to see the point where Christopher Columbus landed on his second journey to the New World.
From Salt River Bay it’s a short drive to the stylish AMA at Cane Bay restaurant at The Waves at Cane Bay hotel.
We sit outside on a deck over the water and enjoy tuna tartare, mahi, and other dishes to the sound of crashing waves. It’s one of the best meals of the trip.
St Croix Itinerary: Day 4
The next morning our 5 days in St Croix continue with a drive to the Carambola Beach Resort. When we arrive, we head off on a hike through the trees above the sea.
We walk for an hour along the narrow Trumbull Trail, spotting hermit crabs and tiny lizards along the way. Eventually we emerge from the trees to find ourselves on the pebble beach at Annaly Bay. The tide pools here are ripe for swimming.
We take a dip with the fish, then hike back to the Carambola Beach Resort. We pick up the car, driving into the lush interior of the island for lunch at the Mt. Pellier Domino Club near Frederiksted.
The burgers and local Mamma Wanna rum are classics, and the resident beer-drinking pigs are an unusual sight to see in the rainforest.
From the Domino Club we drive back to Christiansted for drinks at the Breakers Roar Tiki Bar, a waterfront bar with cocktails that come in unique glasses with flames coming out the top.
Dark wood and lamps shaped like old diving helmets and puffer fish round out the tropical scene.
It’s a short walk from the tiki bar to Savant, where we settle in for dinner in the enchanting garden. We order everything from shrimp and grits to grilled tuna, and it’s all delicious.
St Croix Itinerary: Day 5
The next morning our 5 days in St Croix culminate in a snorkeling trip to Buck Island. After a quick coffee at VI Coffee Roasters in the King Christian Hotel, we leave on a boat from the waterfront in Christiansted.
20 minutes later, we’re snorkeling on one of the world’s only underwater trails. It takes us around the Buck Island Reef, where we spot fish of all shapes and colors.
Afterwards the boat drops us off on Turtle Beach, a beautiful stretch of shoreline with pelicans diving in the turquoise water. There’s white sand and plenty of sunshine, and it’s a great place to end our trip.
5 Days in St Croix
When the boat gets back to Christiansted, we head to the house to get ready to fly home. It’s been a memorable trip to St Croix, and I feel lucky to have experienced it with locals.
This may be the least visited part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, but if word gets out about how amazing it is, everyone’s going to go. I recommend going before they do.
