Lavender Field Near London

Today I want to bring you my guide to visiting a lavender field near London. This is a popular activity in the UK capital in the summer months, when English fields and lavender farms burst with purple flowers and fragrance.

I always knew there were lavender fields near London, but it wasn’t until recently that I realized how close they were.

I’d been to one in Hampshire before, but I’d never dreamed there were lavender farms in Surrey, Kent, Hertfordshire, and other home counties.

When I learned there was even a lavender field near London that I could reach without a car, I knew I had to go. Which is how I’ve ended up at Mayfield Lavender Farm in Surrey.

How to Get from London to Mayfield Lavender

It was easy to get here, too. There are trains from London to West Croydon and Purley. Local bus 166 stops at or near both stations, and it goes straight to the Oaks Park stop at the entrance to Mayfield Lavender Farm.

There are also trains from London to Sutton, from where bus S1 goes to Banstead. You can change in Banstead for bus 166 to Oaks Park.

The Oaks Park bus stop has its own convenient entrance to Mayfield Lavender Farm, making things even easier.

If you drive to the lavender field, there’s on-site parking and other places to park in the area. Parking at the farm is included in the entry fee, too.

Best Time to Visit Lavender Fields Near London

As far as when is best to see lavender in England, most of the lavender fields close to London are open from around June 1st to August 31st each summer.

You can check their websites and Instagram accounts to see the exact dates of the London lavender fields season each year and find out when the flowers are in peak bloom.

When it comes to the best time of day to visit a lavender field near London, it’s usually good to arrive around the opening or closing time to avoid large crowds.

If you can go on a weekday, even better. I’m here on a Thursday morning and it’s already busy 15 minutes after opening.

Mayfield Lavender Farm in Surrey

So what’s it like to visit a lavender farm near London? The Mayfield Lavender Farm itself lies at a crossroads in Banstead. It sits on a gently sloping hill surrounded by trees.

The field is small enough that it’s easy to walk around and through in an hour or so. In fact, it’s a lot smaller than I imagined it would be.

There are points of interest dotted throughout, from gazebos that offer welcome shade on sunny days to a red phone box that’s perfect for photos of the lavender field.

The farm has a cafe with covered picnic tables at the entrance, as well as a small shop selling themed gifts, aromatherapy products, fragrances, seeds for lavender gardens, and more.

There’s also an Airstream trailer that’s been converted into a shop in the middle of the lavender field. It has bouquets, sachets, and other lavender products for sale.

As far as the actual lavender field goes, it has long rows of purple blooms that buzz with bees and let off their classic floral scent. Visitors can walk along and through the plants, around the edges, and under the gazebos.

Pretty much anything goes here apart from picking the flowers, having picnics, and flying drones.
