When I travel, I like to feel like I’m in a home away from home. Some hotels have an amazing capacity for allowing me to experience that. Which is why I’m excited to bring you this advertising feature with my review of The Last Word Constantia in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Last Word Constantia
I arrive in Cape Town after an overnight flight from London. I got a bit of sleep, but I have jet lag and I’m feeling discombobulated in a way that only long-haul flights can make me feel.
I hop in a taxi to Constantia, one of Cape Town’s most desirable neighborhoods. This leafy district is known for its elegant homes and lush vineyards, and as soon as I arrive I know I’m going to like it.
Not long later, my taxi pulls into an unpretentious driveway. A gate rolls back to reveal a single-story building that looks more like a home than a luxury hotel in Cape Town.
Hotel Reception and Gardens
I walk into the reception and am given a friendly welcome. My room isn’t ready yet—it’s barely 10 o’clock in the morning.
But I’m offered tea and coffee in the lounge and am given carte blanche to help myself to the breakfast buffet. Which I do. It’s delicious.
Curious, I look around The Last Word Constantia’s lounge and gardens. The former is full of elegant sofas with fluffy pillows, all of which fit seamlessly into their lush surroundings.
The latter features everything from a swimming pool to birdbaths and all the bougainvillea I could swoon over.
Rooms at The Last Word Constantia
By the time I’m done photographing everything, my room is ready. I’m led along a garden path and through my own private terrace to it. It all feels very enchanted.
When I enter, I find myself in an enormous space with more pillows and a bathroom almost as large as the room itself (and complete with a stand-alone tub).
There’s a desk where I can work, and a cozy seating area with lots of magazines to read (I devour the one with an article about the winelands, where I’m heading for a wedding in a few days’ time).
It’s all light and bright, and feels a million miles from the wind and rain I left in London.
There’s complimentary coffee and tea, too, and the drinks in the fridge are included. It really does feel like a home away from home.
Local Cape Town Attractions
I get settled in at The Last Word Constantia and spend the afternoon exploring the nearby botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch.
This is my third trip to Cape Town and I’ve gone to see them on every visit. It’s great to have somewhere so lush near the hotel.
Afternoon Tea at The Last Word Constantia
But I’m not gone for long. I can’t miss afternoon tea, after all. The Last Word Constantia offers a complimentary daily afternoon tea to hotel guests, and I arrive back just in time for scones with cream and jam.
I settle in to enjoy them with a pot of English Breakfast in the lounge, and it all feels very cozy.
Peddlars Restaurant
There’s more food, too. Right next to The Last Word Constantia is Peddlars restaurant. I walk over for dinner and find myself in an expansive space with a bar, casual dining room, outdoor seating area, and open wood-fire grill.
A bottle of Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Cabernet Sauvignon starts things off on a good note, and everything from spinach and feta croquettes to gnocchi gorgonzola and peri-peri prawns keeps my taste buds happy.
The wedge salad could use a bit more flavor, but that’s probably because I order it without bacon. The only downside to the meal is that I’m too full to finish the chocolate brownie for dessert.
The Last Word Constantia Turn-Down Service
Back in my hotel room, I find the turn-down service has transformed my living quarters into a warm space for sleeping.
A bathrobe is laid out on the bed, and there’s a bite-size brownie on my pillow. I can’t resist tasting it, and I do so hoping it will give me sweet dreams.
The Last Word Constantia Breakfast
The next day I wake up and head to breakfast next to the The Last Word Constantia’s lounge. The buffet is filled with fresh fruit (I take seconds of the mango), pastries, juices, yogurts, smoked salmon, avocado slices, and muffins.
I eat too much but still want to sample the cooked breakfast. The corn cake stack topped with poached eggs and hollandaise goes down a treat.
I’m busy with pre-wedding festivities during the day, but I come back in the evening to find that the afternoon tea selection of the day is a yellow cake.
I’m tempted to take some to bed with me, but thankfully I find a creme brulee waiting on my pillow when I get to my room. This is even better than home.
The next morning I try the eggs Florentine for breakfast, and I’m once again rewarded for my choice (although I’m getting the feeling I can’t go wrong at The Last Word Constantia).
The Verdict on The Last Word Constantia
Afterwards I’m off to reception to check out of my hotel room and head out on safari near Cape Town.
It’s been a great stay, and I’ve been happy to feel like I’ve had a home away from home for two days at The Last Word Constantia. My next accommodation has a lot to live up to.
