Today I want to share my review of afternoon tea at Threadneedles hotel in London with you. The hotel invited me and a friend to experience its afternoon tea offering, and here’s how it went.

The City of London is quiet on the weekends. The brisk pace of the bankers is gone, and a strange silence pervades this usually bustling area of central London.

As I emerge from the tube at Bank station and pass by the Royal Exchange, I’m the only person on the street.

And once I reach my destination and settle in for afternoon tea at Threadneedles hotel, I feel like I have the whole of the City to myself.

Well, myself and my friend, who joins me under the historic stained-glass dome of the atrium for a few hours of indulgence compliments of the hotel.

We have the lobby to ourselves for most of our afternoon tea at Threadneedles hotel, and we sit surrounded by tall wooden cabinets lining sky-high walls.

The space has a slightly masculine feel, but the elegant dome and afternoon tea service add a touch of femininity to the ambiance.

Champagne Afternoon Tea

We start with champagne—as one does with afternoon tea in London—and then move onto fresh mint and Earl Grey teas when our flutes are finished.

A variety of finger sandwiches ranging from smoked Severn and Wye salmon with cream cheese to honey roast Norfolk ham sate our savory palates before we start on the scones and pastries.

The pastries at our Threadneedles hotel afternoon tea are themed around Great Britons. From Winston Churchill to Princess Diana, they’re influenced by famous Brits throughout history.

There’s a royal lavender cupcake with a silver-and-lilac sugar crown for Queen Elizabeth I, an opera gateau for John Lennon, and a spiced rum cake for Admiral Lord Nelson.

The pastries are sweet and satisfying, and I can’t help but feel like the theme of the afternoon tea is fitting given I now have British citizenship (I should know my new country’s greats, after all).

At the end of our afternoon tea at Threadneedles hotel, we have a bit of trouble tracking down our server to say good-bye.

But once we do we walk back out into the empty streets, which by now are getting dark with the onset of evening.

Experiencing Threadneedles’ afternoon tea has been pleasant, all the more so knowing my friend and I (and the Great Britons) had the whole City to ourselves.

  1. I love the concept of this afternoon tea! Everything looks delicious – especially that Victoria-sponge-like strawberry cupcake!

    Since I have yet to experience the good ol’ afternoon tea, I think I’m definitely going to look into this one. It looks like a great introduction 🙂

  7. I am visiting London in April and already have tea reservations at The Ampersand Hotel and The Ritz. Might need to add this tea to my list! It looks fabulous!

  11. Afternoon tea, especially at the weekend is one of lifes little pleasures. Managing to have it in such grand surroundings whilst still having peace and quiet must make the cakes taste even sweeter. I’ll be giving it a go myself in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the idea and review.
