Lady’s Guide to Angel, London Restaurants, Pubs, Bars, and More

One of my favorite London neighborhoods is Angel. Located in the northeastern part of central London, Angel is home to beautiful buildings, peaceful parks, and the famous stretch of Upper Street with all of its Angel restaurants, pubs, bars, and boutiques.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Angel recently, and I’ve had a chance to get under neighborhood’s skin. The area surrounds the Angel tube station and centers around the lower part of Upper Street.

From the bustle of the high street to the calm of the side streets, Angel manages to be quirky, charming, and mainstream all at the same time.

Angel, London Pubs

Angel pubs are some of my favorite places in the area. In addition to the ones I visited on the ill-fated round of pub golf I once played on Upper Street, I’ve discovered several pubs in Angel worth visiting.

The first of these is The Duke Organic. Located on a side street to the east of Upper Street, the pub claims to be the first certified organic pub in Britain.

As such, all beers, ciders, and other English drinks are held to the strictest organic standards. As is the food, which is on the better end of the pub food spectrum.

Speaking of which, another Angel pub on a side street near Regent’s Canal serves some of the best beer in the area. The Earl of Essex is one of the top craft beer pubs in London, and it’s worth a visit if you love a good brew.

And if it’s Cajun and Creole food you’re after, the Plaquemine Lock pub in Angel is for you. This pub on Regent’s Canal has a New Orleans vibe and features live jazz along with its food and drinks.

In addition to pubs, there are some excellent Angel restaurants.

Just off Upper Street, some of the best are on Camden Passage, a skinny lane with a great market. From brunch places to international cuisine, there are a lot to choose from.

When I’m not drooling over the Angel restaurants on Camden Passage, I can usually be found eating Mexican food at Chilango.

Normally I avoid London Mexican food, but Chilango is one of the few places in the city that does it decently.

Angel, London Bars

Not everything I do in Angel revolves around food, though. I promise. No, there are drinks involved as well.

Upper Street has a great nightlife scene, and I’ve recently been to Escudo de Cuba, a Cuban restaurant and bar that serves good mojitos.

Then there’s the famous 69 Colebrooke Row cocktail bar, which is also known as The Bar With No Name. This secret spot serves great cocktails in an intimate space.

Side Streets

Aside from eating and drinking, I’ve enjoyed exploring the neighborhood’s beautiful residential areas. Long rows of brick buildings with colorful doors are punctuated by canal boats, historic churches, and landscaped gardens.

Picturesque squares are surrounded by tall brick buildings, and tiny streets like the aforementioned Camden Passage are home to a myriad of shops. Chapel Market is a great place to browse the wares, too.

The neighborhood has more to explore, though. The many other Angel restaurants, pubs, shops, and bars that make the area such a popular place are worth discovering.

And that’s to say nothing of the part of Upper Street that reaches into Islington, another great area to walk around.

My travel schedule is busy over the next few months, but I look forward to exploring more of Angel on the rare free days I have in London. I hope you can do the same.
