Today I want to share my guide to Malaysia Night in London with you. This annual celebration of Malaysian food, song, dance, and culture in Trafalgar Square is a great way to get into the spirit of the country in Asia.

Malaysia Night in London

Autumn has finally arrived in London. After a bit of a sunshine teaser earlier this week, the weather has become significantly cooler. As such, I’m starting to get excited about my upcoming fall and winter travels.

One of the most exciting trips I have in the pipeline is a two-week jaunt to Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Ho Chi Minh City.

As if the UK capital knew I was in need of some pre-trip foodie fun, last night Trafalgar Square hosted Malaysia Night in London. It was the perfect place to get in the mood for my upcoming visit to the country.

With the promise of a giant night market featuring food stalls from London’s best Malaysian restaurants, it was going to be a great event. I was excited. And hungry.

I’d done some research before visiting Malaysia Night in London, and I arrived intent on finding the best Malaysian food in the city.

My first stop on this quest was Makan Cafe. Despite an agonizingly long line, I eventually got my roti canai. It was perfection in flatbread. If the line hadn’t been so long, I would have gone back for another.

I should have. My friend and I quickly discovered that although the market was supposed to stay open until 10pm, most of the stalls had run out of food by 9:15.

After watching the cultural performance and dancing on the large stage in Trafalgar Square, we found ourselves scrambling to find more food at Malaysia Night in London.

We finally found it in the form of Champor Champor, a restaurant that was serving leftovers of a sort.

With only rice, calamari, thick fish curry sauce, and a few vegetables left, they creatively combined the ingredients into what turned out to be a decent dish.

As my friend and I each enjoyed a bowl by the fountain in Trafalgar Square, I pictured myself not in the present moment in chilly London, but in a time three months hence on a beach in Langkawi. I can’t wait.
