Lady’s 7 Best Places to Travel for the Easter Holidays

Easter is coming! Here in the UK we’re looking forward to four days off over Easter weekend. But with the weather in London not exactly being predictable, a lot of us are setting our sights on destinations further afield than mum’s house in Wherever-shire. Which is why I bring you A Lady in London’s guide to the best places to travel for the Easter holidays.

Best Places to Travel for the Easter Holidays

Whether you’re looking for early spring sunshine, tons of chocolate eggs (yay!), or a place that takes Easter more seriously as a religious holiday than where you live at home, there’s a perfect place to travel for the holiday weekend. Here’s my list.

1. Malta for the Easter Holidays

Malta tops my list of the best places to travel for the Easter holidays. This island nation in the Mediterranean knows how to do the celebrations right.

When I went to Malta for the Easter holidays a few years ago, I wasn’t expecting to find myself in the middle of religious processions and festivities.

But Malta takes Easter seriously, especially in places like the hilltop town of Rabat, where visitors can watch people walking through the streets dressed as everything from Roman soldiers to fishers of men.

For the less religiously inclined, there are great Easter pastries to try in Malta over the Easter holiday weekend. Don’t miss the delicious Figolli cookies. These sweet treats are made with lemon-flavored dough, almond paste filling, and chocolate eggs on top. Yum.

2. Prague for the Easter Holidays

Prague is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but also one of the best places to travel for the Easter holidays.

This has much to do with the big Easter markets in Prague’s Old Town Square. They take over the area in front of the famous Tyn Chruch and bring the Czech capital to life in the springtime.

Throughout Old Town Square, everything from sheep-shaped Easter cookies to beautiful hand-painted eggs can be found in rustic wooden stalls.

There’s plenty of hot food to be found, and for those in a tactile mood, there’s also a petting zoo complete with lambs and other cute cuddly critters.

3. Sevilla for the Easter Holidays

Next on my list of the best places to travel for the Easter holidays is Spain’s Sevilla. Down in Andalusia, this city goes all-out during Holy Week.

I’ve been to Sevilla twice during the Easter holidays, and it’s one of the most exciting times to travel to the city.

All throughout Semana Santa, the week leading up to Easter Sunday, people from across Andalusia come to the city in processions that last throughout the day. Just ignore the fact that their costumes look oddly similar to those of the Ku Klux Klan.

In the evenings, the tapas bars and restaurants in Sevilla’s city center come alive with celebrations. There’s a party atmosphere, and there’s no better place to soak up the culture and meet the locals.

4. Jerusalem for the Easter Holidays

Unsurprisingly, Jerusalem is one of the best places to travel for the Easter holidays.

I went to Israel a couple years ago to see what it was all about, and was amazed by the number of people that had come to spend Easter in Jerusalem.

In addition to the religious pilgrimage sites that many visitors want to see, the city is full of brightly colored Easter egg pastries and other cultural and sacred nods to the holiday.

There are processions through the streets as people do the Stations of the Cross on their way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the markets buzz with festive goods to mark the occasion.

5. Rome for the Easter Holidays

Rome is a great city at any time of year, but at Easter it takes on a special significance. It’s truly one of the best places to travel for the Easter holidays.

This is not least because of the Vatican. The Pope’s Easter Mass at St Peter’s Basilica is a highlight for many (just reserve your tickets far in advance), and reason enough to travel to Italy in the spring.

But Rome’s celebrations start before Easter Sunday, with Good Friday’s candlelit procession and Holy Saturday’s Easter Vigil Mass.

And this being Italy, Easter food is just as important. From torta di Pasqua, an Easter cheese bread, to Colomba Pasquale, a cake shaped like a dove, there are plenty of treats to enjoy.

6. Brussels for the Easter Holidays

And speaking of treats, Brussels is one of the best places to travel for the Easter holidays.

Known for their world-class confections, the city’s many chocolatiers go all-out at Easter to make the most stylish, lavish, large, and otherwise amazing chocolate Easter eggs.

While in town, don’t miss Pierre Marcolini’s luxurious chocolate eggs. They’re so beautiful and fashionable they should almost be worn instead of eaten.

Staring at them in his shop on the Grand Sablon is like looking at art in an edible gallery. And that’s to say nothing of eating them, which is a religious experience in itself.

7. Santorini for the Easter Holidays

If you’re looking to escape to somewhere warmer and more paradise-like than London, Santorini is a great place to travel for the Easter holidays.

This famous Greek island is a popular spot to get away to. From whitewashed towns like Oia to sweeping views and delicious food, it’s a great spring destination.

Easter can be an ideal time to visit Santorni for a number of reasons. The summer tourist crowds haven’t yet descended on the island, and the weather can be pleasantly warm. You’ll have more of a chance to meet and interact with locals, too.

Just keep in mind that Greek Orthodox Easter is usually on a different date than Anglican Easter. Don’t expect to find Easter-specific religious services if you’re looking for them.

That said, if you want to stay for Orthodox Easter, you can experience Holy Week processions and events, Good Friday, and a big celebration on Easter Sunday. The town of Pyrgos lights up at night with thousands of lit tins, and there are delicious seasonal foods to try.
