Today I want to bring you my guide to taking an Amersham day trip from London. This town in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, England is a great place to visit if you love heritage architecture and beautiful countryside in equal measure. Spending a day in Amersham is a great way to see the town and take in the English landscapes around it.

How to Get to Amersham

If you’re wondering how to get to Amersham from London, you can easily go by tube or train. The town is so close to the UK capital you can even do it as a half-day trip from London.

Amersham is on the Metropolitan line of the London Underground, so all you have to do is hop on the tube and enjoy the ride. If you catch a fast service that doesn’t stop at every station on the way, you’ll get there even sooner.

You can also take an Amersham day trip by train. Regular services depart Marylebone station. They can be slightly faster than the tube, so it’s worth considering them when you travel.

I’ve taken the tube to get here, and when I arrive I’m excited to start my Amersham day trip.

I get even more excited when I discover there’s a path through a woodland to get to the historic heart of Old Amersham. It’s a beautiful walk under a green canopy, and it makes me feel like I’ve left London far behind.

Soon I reach a clearing and I’m met with a stunning view of Old Amersham below. The steeple of the 13th-century St Mary’s Church is classic England, and as I descend along a field, I look forward to getting a look at the town.

Old Amersham

When I arrive, I’m rewarded with streets full of heritage houses, historic hotels, and cozy pubs.

The high street is packed with listed buildings and old coaching inns like the Tudor-era Kings Arms Hotel, and I want to go into every shop and restaurant along the way.

Amersham Almshouses

But I resist the temptation because I’m off to the home of a fellow alum from my university. She lives here, and she’s offered to show me around during my Amersham day trip.

After tea at her home, we walk down the high street as she points out historic almshouses, local pubs, and the Amersham Museum. Set in a 15th-century building, it’s full of exhibits on the town’s history.

At the end of the street, we come to the Old Amersham Market Hall, where she shows me the old jail and a plaque commemorating Amersham’s inclusion in the Domesday Book. The depth of history here is inspiring.

Amersham Market

Passing half-timbered facades and colorful houses, we make our way to a market. Amersham hosts a lot of markets throughout the year, and this one is full of stalls selling everything from clothing to food and handmade ceramics.

We take a tour, soaking up the sights of colorful jewelry and local crafts as the scent of fresh samosas fills the air.

The gardens on The Broadway are buzzing with the sound of live bands playing for the occasion, and the flower beds are rife with roses and other seasonal blooms.

Streets

After soaking up the market and enjoying some samosas, I continue my Amersham day trip by exploring more of the streets around the old town.

From the pretty doors on Whielden Street to the front gardens on Church Street, there’s a lot of beauty to take in here.

Walks

Later I head off into the Chiltern Hills again. I’m happy to be in the countryside so close to London. I’m tempted to take a country walk, but I make do with the fields and woodland path that leads back to the station.

I have some time before my train departs, so I finish off my Amersham day trip with a walk down Sycamore Road in Amersham-on-the-Hill. There are more shops and restaurants here.

While the buildings aren’t as eye-catching as those in Old Amersham, it’s still nice to get an idea of what the rest of the town looks like.

Amersham Day Trip

Soon I’m off on the train to London, watching the countryside scenery slowly build back up into urban landscapes.

I’ve enjoyed my Amersham day trip, and I still can’t believe the town is close enough to London to travel there on the tube. Now that I know how easy it is to visit, I’m sure I’ll be back soon.
