It’s not every night I stay in a hotel room that’s larger than my flat. In fact, most rooms I’ve slept in are barely big enough to fit a bed, let alone anything else. This is particularly true in a city like London, where property prices keep hotel rooms small and rates high. But this week I was invited to experience one of the Taj 51 Buckingham Gate suites in London’s Westminster neighborhood. They bucked the trend.
Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites
51 Buckingham Gate is a Taj hotel, so before I arrived I knew I was in for a luxurious experience. But I had no idea exactly how luxurious it would be until I was shown to my room. Or rooms, as it turned out.
My Taj 51 Buckingham Gate suite consisted of three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a massive living room, a huge dining room, a kitchen, and a foyer that was bigger than most London hotel rooms.
After the butler, Vasi, gave me a tour, I began to explore my Taj 51 Buckingham Gate suite. The beds were bedecked with beautiful pillows, as were the chairs in the living room. That room also had a huge TV and several sofas.
Next door, the dining room had a table large enough for a family feast, and the kitchen was kitted out with everything needed to cook any kind of food I could think of.
Afternoon Tea at Taj 51 Buckingham Gate
But as anyone who knows me is aware, I like to leave the cooking to others. That was one of the reasons I was excited the Taj 51 Buckingham Gate hotel had offered me afternoon tea in the guests-only library.
I settled into a comfortable seat and enjoyed a large pot of Earl Grey tea and a tiered tray of finger sandwiches, warm scones, and cakes. The staff looked after me attentively, and it was a great way to spend the afternoon.

Back up in my Taj 51 Buckingham Gate suite, I settled in for a quiet Sunday night. A friend stopped by and we watched a movie in the living room.
Had I not been so full from afternoon tea, I would’ve taken advantage of the Taj 51 Buckingham Gate’s offer of complimentary popcorn and soft drinks for movie watchers.
The next morning I woke up early and enjoyed the Molton Brown cosmetics range in my enormous bathroom as I got ready for the day.
Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Breakfast
Soon I was downstairs enjoying breakfast, where I was looked after by the friendly staff. I had some fresh fruit from the buffet, and my inner American couldn’t resist ordering pancakes and crispy bacon as well.
The former were perfectly fluffy, and the latter were savory and offered a nice compliment to the sweet maple syrup.
After breakfast I met with the Taj 51 Buckingham Gate’s marketing manager.
She introduced me to the executive sous chef, who told me about their seasonal afternoon tea offerings and asked whether the pancakes were up to my American standards (they were!).
Hotel Tour
After talking with him, we toured several Taj 51 Buckingham Gate suites in the hotel’s two other wings. They were all unique in their shapes, sizes, and decor, making for a pleasant surprise behind every door.
From there we took a quick look at the spa, the fitness center, and the Michelin-starred restaurant, Quilon. Throughout the tour we passed through the hotel’s beautiful interior courtyard with its large fountain.
Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites
At the end, it was time to head back to my Taj 51 Buckingham Gate suite and start packing my things. It was sad to say good-bye after such a luxurious stay.
The warm staff, good food, and spacious suite had won me over, and I’d had a great stay overall. The hotel opens new suites all the time, though, and I’m excited to have an excuse to return to see more of them in the future.
