Today I want to share my guide to a weekend in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk with you. This is a great weekend getaway from London and a fun place to spend time on the beach on the North Norfolk coast in England.

When I first fell in love with traveling a friend told me that I should always be careful when choosing travel companions.

I was warned of messy roommates, cautioned against constant complainers, and scared by tales of people who had very unnerving ideas of fun.

In spite of the dire warnings, however, I’ve always managed to find good travel companions, be they close friends, family members, or significant others.

In a further test of my good luck, last weekend my boyfriend and I set out on a road trip to Norfolk with new travel buddies; namely, our neighbors in Hampstead who travel just as much as we do (and maybe even more!).

The trip got off to a good start with a stop for dinner at a restaurant near Cambridge. From there we drove up to the coast through some of the thickest fog I’ve seen since my San Francisco days.

My boyfriend did an excellent job driving, and we ended up in Wells-next-the-Sea without heading off a cliff or into an oncoming car. Our friends were pleased.

Wells-next-the-Sea Beach

On Saturday we spent the morning exploring the beach in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk. The sun played hide-and-seek behind the clouds, illuminating the sand and boats in an ever-changing light show.

The colorful beach huts made for excellent photo subjects, and the huge beach was perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Burnham Market

After the beach, we headed to Burnham Market, a chi chi little town not far from Wells-next-the-Sea.

We ate lunch at a seafood restaurant, then had a leisurely glass of wine at The Hoste and a power-shopping session at the nearby boutiques.

As if I didn’t already know that I had expensive taste, I discovered that Ralph Lauren coats and jeans fit me pretty, and just like that I acquired one of each.

Evening in Wells-next-the-Sea

Dinner that evening was at The Crown, where we feasted on trout, duck, and cheesecake.

On our postprandial stroll we came across a random bar on a boat, where we drank wine out of plastic cups and listened to a local band play their best kazoo solos. Our friends still seemed to like us after that, which was a big relief.

Holkham Beach

On Sunday we headed to Holkham Beach, which is famous for being the location where Gwyneth Paltrow’s final scene from Shakespeare in Love was filmed. Gwyneth was absent that day, but we enjoyed our walk all the same.

Norwich, Norfolk

The afternoon was spent on a nice drive through some of the small towns in Norfolk and ended in a somewhat wild hunt for a place to eat lunch.

We ended up in Norwich, a city whose beautiful architecture and pretty streets caught us by surprise after we assuaged our growling bellies.

The drive home from Wells-next-the-Sea was not without a couple of unscheduled detours, but we made it back to Hampstead in time for our neighbor to make it to a prior dinner engagement.

So far she and her husband are still speaking to us. We’re hoping it’s a sign that we proved to be equally good travel companions as we felt they were!
