My favorite flower is the tulip. Happy and colorful, it’s a cheerful harbinger of spring. As such, for my birthday my boyfriend and I decided to take a trip to Amsterdam to visit the famous tulip fields. Today I want to share about the experience in this guide to visiting Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands.
Visiting Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands
Basing ourselves in Amsterdam, we took a combination of a train and bus to get to the flower fields in Lisse.
We arrived at Keukenhof Gardens around noon on a sunny day in mid-April, ready to see the millions of bulbs that bloom there each spring.
After entering the gardens, we spent four hours meandering along tulip-lined paths, walking around beautiful ponds, and making our way through colorful greenhouses.
This is one of the world’s best spring travel destinations, and the selection of tulips at Keukenhof Gardens didn’t disappoint.
Keukenhof Gardens Tulips
There were tiny tulips budding just above the ground, larger-than-life tulips that came up to my waist, and bright red and pink tulips that looked like they had lights shining under them.
There were velvety black tulips that had a mysterious air about them, skinny tulips, fat bulbous tulips, gracefully curving tulips, and tulips with frayed fabric-like edges.
There were yellow tulips with white trim that looked like Easter eggs, purple-and-white tulips that looked like radicchio, and pink-and-white tulips that looked like candy canes.
Other Spring Flowers and Features
But visiting Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands isn’t just about seeing tulips. Surrounding my favorite flowers were hyacinths in every color, bright yellow daffodils, and beautiful white narcissus blooms.
There were swans in the lakes, sculptures dotted throughout the gardens, and a giant windmill in case we forgot we were in Holland. I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was.

At the end of the afternoon, we tore ourselves away from the flowers and traveled back to Amsterdam. It had been a great day visiting Keukenhof Gardens and an amazing way to spend my birthday.
I’m not sure I could pick a favorite flower of the day, but I was certainly amused to see so many tulips at Keukenhof Gardens with the word “lady” in the name. Can’t be a coincidence, right?
