Today I want to bring you my guide to spending one day in Dublin, Ireland. This city is a great place to visit, and there are a lot of things you can do and see here in a day.

When it comes to travel, the last places I go are always the closest to home. Give me the option of flying to Australia or visiting Ireland, and I will probably choose the former.

Faraway places inevitably sound more exotic, and at some point I find myself having lived in London for years without ever traveling to Dublin. Thankfully, that changes today.

I’m in Dublin to speak at the Web Summit, an annual tech conference that draws over 20,000 people from all over the world.

I’m looking forward to giving a talk about advanced social media strategies, but even more than that, I’m excited to spend a day in Dublin. A sunny day, no less.

Things to Do in One Day in Dublin

As someone who lives in London, I know how rare blue skies can be in the British and Irish Isles, and before my talk I can’t help spending my one day in Dublin taking pictures.

Buildings in One Day in Dublin

From the famous bridges over the River Liffey to the historic buildings and green squares, Dublin shows me a wealth of beauty under a sapphire-blue sky.

With only one day in Dublin, I don’t have time to explore the city in depth. I miss the Guinness Storehouse, where I had a fun time on my last trip to Dublin, and I don’t get to see the Book of Kells in the Old Library at Trinity College.

But I do get to see some of the city’s lovely exterior, from the graceful arch of Ha’penny Bridge to the columned tiers of the National Library.

I walk through Temple Bar, Dublin’s famous nightlife hub, photographing the pubs and street art at an unusually quiet time of day.

I pass through St Stephen’s Green, where the idyllic ponds and dazzling fountains put on a show in the autumn sun.

By the time the sun goes down, I’m well into my talk at the Web Summit and the Irish sky is preparing for rain.

It makes me all the more glad to have had my sunny day in Dublin, which in turn has led me to question why it took me so many years to get back here after moving to London.

Next time I’m offered a choice between a long-haul destination and Ireland, I’ll have to think a bit harder before making my decision.

  1. I totally understand what you mean when you said you’d pick a further away place to travel to, especially given all the exotic places you’ve been.
Nevertheless, Dublin will still be on my list when I relocate to London next month! Thanks for the blog.

  2. That’s so true. We always find far-flung places more exciting and worthwhile to travel to, while a gem is right in our backyard! Even I am breaking that mentality and I will be exploring my neighborhoods now. By the way, lovely Dublin shots!

  3. I know the feeling Julie – I always choose far away places over exploring the UK. I have changed that this year though and have tried to see more of my own country. I visited Scotland for the first time ever and have done a couple of little road trips in England and there are so many fabulous places so close to home. I’ve not made it to Dublin yet though but it is on the list. Quite shameful seeing as I’ve lived in London my whole life!

  4. It’s especially lovely that you had a sunny day in Dublin! I was exactly the same while living in London (I’m actually from Southern Ireland). I jumped on planes all the time, but didn’t make to Cornwall or the Lake District! I’ll have to make time for that this year.

  5. Sometimes the best destinations are not far from home — it’s so true! Although I would love to visit Ireland one day, looks like such a beautiful country.

  6. It looks like such a pretty city and I hear it’s a lot of fun as well – it would be such an easy weekend break from London that I have no idea why I haven’t done this yet! Hope you enjoyed the conference too and it was so lovely to finally meet you at Travel Massive recently 🙂

  7. Gorgeous pictures! I’m exactly the same – I’ve lived in London for five years and never visited Ireland in that time. I must fix that some time soon, I keep hearing from friends how beautiful (and fun!) it is there.

  8. Oh how I love Dublin! Although I am rather embarrassed to admit that if it wasn’t for the film ‘Leap Year’ Ireland would have been further down my list of places to see. It’s a fab city, thanks for sharing!
