Lady and the Trade Show

I always thought trade shows were glamorous. Back in my banking days I was chained to my desk all day every day, and the idea of a trade show was somewhat akin to the idea of freedom. People walked around all day, found new ideas for their businesses, did deals, and went to fun parties afterwards. It was work heaven. At least I thought it was.

Lady and the Pub Quiz

When I moved to London two years ago, I started to notice a common theme among the pubs in my neighborhood: pub quiz night. Naturally competitive and overly confident in my knowledge of random British trivia, I got excited about the idea. My expat friends did not. They completely refused to buy into my idea that it would be fun to subject ourselves to more than our normal dose of ridicule for being stupid Americans.

Lady in Silicon Valley

I grew up in Silicon Valley. Intel, Cisco, and Oracle were household names in my town not just because everyone used their products, but because everyone’s parents were employed by them. As a kid I didn’t realize how unique my home was; I thought everyone’s parents—except for mine, of course—became paper millionaires overnight and every household had at least three computers by 1986. And while I was stuck driving a 1992 Dodge Caravan to school every morning, most of my classmates were embarrassed that their BMWs were only 3 series. It was, as we came to call it, a bubble.

Lady on Lake Como
