Lady of the Long Layover
My round-the-world trip took an unexpected detour in Hong Kong two days ago. Our flight from Auckland was delayed for an hour and a half, and upon arrival in Hong Kong we found ourselves marooned in the former British territory with no flight to Tokyo until the following morning. Cathay put us up in a hotel inside the airport, and we started making lemonade from this handful of layover lemons.
I happen to have a bunch of former Goldman coworkers who live and work in Hong Kong. I emailed one of them to see if we could get some people together for drinks that evening. He was just boarding a flight from Singapore back to Hong Kong, but sent me the number of another of our friends. My boyfriend and I ate our Cathay-subsidized dinner at the hotel and then headed into Hong Kong to meet up with my friend.
We managed to find our way from the train station to SoHo via the escalator, and met my friend at Staunton Street. He took us to Staunton’s Bar where we had a good time catching up, and then my boyfriend and I headed to some nearby bars for another drink and some fabulous people watching.
Our unintentional stop in Hong Kong turned into a great night out, and we certainly enjoyed our lemonade. Now we’re in Tokyo feasting on good sushi and trying to navigate our way through this labyrinthine city!
