Lady of Language

Today I found a great website for teaching Americans how to speak British English. I knew there were some words they use that we don’t use and vice versa, but I had no idea how many there were!

A few of my favorites:

Barmy – crazy or mad (hilarious! I’m definitely going to use this one a lot!)

Bladdered – drunk (makes sense)

Chuffed – pleased (but doesn’t it sound like it should mean something negative?)

Knock up – wake someone up (hmmm…good to know this one. Will hopefully avoid any awkward misunderstandings!)

Definitely agree with chuffed :) Should be something negative! I have worked in an Australian bank and the Aussies have crazier words & phrases than these :)

I’m glad you agree about chuffed, Shankar! I can imagine the Aussies have some interesting expressions, too!
